1. The Planning Process: Crafting Your Vision
This is where the magic begins! Our journey starts long before the camera even comes out.
- Initial Consultation & Vision Casting: We’ll kick things off with a conversation in person, by phone, or video call, to discuss your unique vision. What kind of “edgy” speaks to you? Do you envision something dark and moody, vibrant and dynamic, or sleek and modern? We’ll talk about your personality, your desired outcome for the photos such as personal keepsakes, professional headshots, portfolio updates and any specific ideas you might have.
- Concept Development: Based on our chat, I’ll help you refine a concept. This might involve brainstorming locations within Toronto that fit the mood, think urban backdrops, unique architectural spaces, or even a studio setting; We’ll discuss lighting styles, and exploring overall aesthetics.
- Mood Board & Inspiration: Sometimes, a visual can say a thousand words. We can collaborate on a shared mood board to collect images, colours, and themes that resonate with the edgy style we’re aiming for. This ensures we’re both on the same page creatively.
2. Your Pre-Photoshoot Preparation: Getting Ready to Shine
A little preparation goes a long way in ensuring a smooth and successful photoshoot. Here are some key things for you to do:
- Rest & Hydrate: Get a good night’s sleep before your session. Being well-rested will help you look and feel your best. Stay hydrated in the days leading up to the shoot as well – it does wonders for your skin!
- Skin & Hair Care: Professional hair and makeup are highly recommended for that polished, edgy look! You can stick to your usual skincare routine but do not over due it, excessive moisturizing can make your skin shine and reflect unwanted light. For hair, ensure it’s clean and styled as you normally would, or how you plan to wear it for the shoot.
- Manicure/Pedicure: Your hands and feet might be visible in some shots, so a simple, clean manicure/pedicure can make a big difference. Neutral or dark nail colours often work best for an edgy aesthetic.
- Pack a Kit: Consider bringing a small bag with essentials like a brush or comb, lip balm, a small mirror, any necessary touch-up makeup, and water.
- Arrive on Time: Punctuality is crucial. Arriving a few minutes early gives you time to relax, settle in, and ensure we maximize our shooting time.
3. What to Wear: Dressing for Edgy Impact
Clothing plays a vital role in creating the desired aesthetic. Here are my top suggestions for what to wear:
- Flattering Clothes are Key: Choose outfits that you feel confident and comfortable in, and that flatter your body shape. When you feel good in what you’re wearing, it translates into your confidence on camera.
- Solid Colours Work Best: For edgy portraits, solid colors are generally preferred over busy patterns or strong logos. Why?
- Focus on You: Solid colours minimize distractions, allowing the viewer’s eye to be drawn directly to you – your expression, your eyes, and your personality.
- Versatility: They are timeless and versatile, fitting a range of edgy aesthetics from sleek and sophisticated to raw and intense.
- Post-Production Freedom: Solid colours provide a clean canvas for artistic editing and colour grading, which are often integral to an edgy look.
- Examples: Think deep blacks, whites, charcoal greys, rich jewel tones (emerald, sapphire, ruby), muted earth tones, or crisp whites.
- Bring Options! It’s always a good idea to bring a few different outfit choices. We can then select the best ones together based on the specific concepts we’re shooting and the lighting we’re using.
- Texture & Layers: To add depth and interest without relying on patterns, consider clothes with interesting textures (leather, denim, knits) or layers (jackets, blazers, scarves).
- Accessories: Strategic accessories like statement jewelry, hats, or unique glasses can enhance the edgy vibe, but don’t overdo it. Less is often more.
- Footwear: Don’t forget your shoes! They can complete an outfit and add to the overall mood. Think boots, sleek sneakers, or stylish heels depending on the look.
4. During the Photoshoot: Relax, Collaborate, and Create
Once you’re prepared, the actual photoshoot is where your vision comes to life.
- Guidance and Direction: You don’t need to know how to pose! I will provide clear and consistent direction, guiding you through different stances, expressions, and angles. My job is to make you feel comfortable and confident in front of the lens.
- Collaboration: While I’m directing, it’s also a collaborative process. If you have an idea or feel particularly drawn to a certain pose, please speak up! Your input is valuable.
- Comfort Breaks: We’ll take breaks as needed to rehydrate, change outfits, or simply relax.
- Trust the Process: It can feel a little awkward at first, but trust that I’m working to capture your best angles and expressions. Just relax, breathe, and enjoy the experience!
5. Post-Photoshoot: Seeing Your Vision Come to Life
- Image Selection: Shortly after our session, you’ll receive a private online gallery of the best unedited images from our shoot. This is your chance to select your favourite shots.
